Jamie sent me a video text of him doing this last night while I was at work and I couldn't believe it. So I tried it out for myself and sure enough, he's on the go, alone! Before I know it he will be walking to the school bus ALONE, going up to t-ball to bat ALONE, and okay, okay, I have time. But he is growing up quickly!
We'll work on his turning next week.
Yesterday Luke had his nine month doctor appointment. He now weighs 21 lbs, 8 oz (65% percentile), is 28 inches long (40% percentile) and his head circumference is 17.75 inches (43% percentile). He didn't need any shots at this visit, but he did have to have a big piece of wax removed from his ear. Ohhhh did he not like that. Of course the doctor told me after the fact that it is very painful. It was a good size chunk and hopefully his ear won't be bothering him anymore.
Back to lunch for Luke!

My new job
This might not be a new job per say, but it just hit me last night. I am a mom. I'm sure you are thinking, seriously, she just figured this out?? Of course I know I am a mom, but it hit me in a new light recently when another duty only mom's like occurred.
Luke got his first cold (very happy to not have Luke in daycare and be on our ninth cold of the year) at nine months old. And it is just a little cold, runny and stuffy nose, a little cranky and tired. No big deal for veteran moms, and not for me either, I just feel bad for the little man. I worked last night and Grandma Jeanette watched him. She said he went to bed fine but then kept waking up crying and she couldn't get him to calm down. I always feel bad when someone else is watching Luke and he isn't on par. He was asleep when I got home at 11pm, I did a few things before I headed upstairs to shower and go to bed. And now it was my turn. As I walked upstairs, he started wailing. He was crying like I have never heard him cry before. Not a cry after getting shots or hitting his head, not a sad cry, not a hungry or tired cry either, it was loud, screaming, like he was in the worst pain he had ever felt. So I picked him up and cuddled with him and he didn't stop, for an hour and a half. He has learned to give hugs, not on command yet, but they are the greatest. He holds on SOOOO tightly and wraps his chubby legs around your stomach and burrows into you. Magically (I'm thinking sleep deprived), he calmed down and he fell asleep. I quickly jumped in the shower to remove the prime rib and feta cheese smell off of me and he wakes up again. Race out of the shower. Back to where we were again.
What made this night so memorable to me was that I was not stressed or uncomfortable like I would have been with any other child, like I would have been if I was babysitting. Because, he is my child. My baby. My little pumpkin who I can see myself in his smile. I was sad he was not feeling well and doing all I could to calm him down. I softly rubbed his head and back while he laid in the crib for a long time. His right hand played with my hands moving each of his tiny 1 1/4 inch long fingers over my fingers and nails while he wrapped each of his fingers on his left hand around my pinky and just held on until he drifted off to sleep. I just marveled at him looking so intricately at each of my fingers as he touched them. I had worked on my feet running around like a crazy mad woman for 6 hours, came home to an unhappy child, and hung myself over his crib for well over a half hour while he played with my hands and I couldn't have asked for a better night. I don't like working evenings because I don't get to put him to bed. But last night was different. Grandma got to put him to bed, and so did I.
He woke up many more times last night but thankfully was not awake for long, just needed his pacifier because he spit it out since he couldn't breathe through his stuffed little nose.
When he woke up this morning, he was rested and we played, and played, and played. He was in a great mood! As we approached nap time, I warmed up a bottle, sat on the couch to feed him, he pushed it away and closed his eyes. He was out. *Sigh* One of my favorite mom moments was taking place and I was not going to move. We cuddled and snuggled for close to three hours on the couch. I was in heaven. I love being a mom, simply for these moments. I rarely let Luke take naps on me because I want to be sure he is good at falling asleep on his own in his crib but when he's not feeling great, I'm letting it slide. These will be our special times to cuddle and let me take extra special care of him. We went to my parent's house this afternoon and when nap time came again, we cuddled and he slept on me for an hour and a half. I loved it. He had a soft blanket on top of him, I listened to him snoring lightly, and his soft breaths blowing on me.
I hope by now you are wondering where Jamie was and why wasn't he up at 1am with Luke while I got my beauty sleep. He was out of town this weekend, surprise surprise! He was in Montana for a show and should be home real soon. If Luke doesn't have a good night again tonight, I would not mind one bit getting up with him again. Sure I have woken up at 6 or 6:30am every day for the past few weeks, spent the last five days alone with Luke, worked three of those nights, but I don't mind it. I am a mom, this is my job, and I love it.

Yesterday, Luke turned nine months old!! I'm pretty sure I said this at eight months, but I'll repeat myself. I cannot believe he's this old already! Time goes so quickly. He is crawling all over, pulling up really well to furniture, walking around it, and has figured out how to go back to sitting down from standing slowly. He goes to the doctor on Wednesday for his check up so I will post his stats then. And this week is a busy week for him! We have his nine month photos tomorrow that I am really excited about. It's too bad he has scratched his face three times in the last two days and had a big brown bruise on his forehead from running into some piece of furniture. Oh well, that's what Photoshop is for. I will post some of my favorites when we get them back. In addition to Wednesday's doc appointment, we are also going to Luke's first Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) class. I have no idea what they do with babies for an hour and a half, but we'll find out! It will be good for Luke to be around other babies and kids more. Plus now that he has a cold, it's only appropriate to give it to someone else right?? :)
I figured out how to entertain Luke for more than a few minutes...over-stimulate him by dumping the basket of toys out around him. He liked it! :)
Uncle Steve and Luke at Grandpa O'Brien's 60th birthday dinner. (I was working of course)
Peggy teaching Luke about technology. I'm blaming you, Peggy, when he learns how to use a touch screen!! :)
It's always smiles with Great-Grandma O'Brien!
Happy 60th birthday, Grandpa!!!
Way too content walking through the apple orchid. Yep, BOB the stroller is fixed!!!
Happy 9 month birthday, Lukey!!!

happiness
My house is silent. No fingers rubbing the vents, dogs barking, Oprah on in the background, Jamie's phone isn't ringing cause he's at preschool, instead, I can just hear the steady hum of the fish tank, my loud computer and of course, Bruce Springsteen playing. If you know me, you know I LOVE my Bruce. I have only seen him in concert seven times; I personally think it should be closer to 27 times given my love for him. I just finished listening to my new favorite, Lady Gaga but thought I should go back to Bruce. In fact, I am brainwashing Luke as early as possible to appreciate and love classic rock artists like Bruce. I used to put my headphones on my belly so Luke could listen to "Thunder Road" (shhh, don't tell Jamie). When he was an infant, I would play Bruce while I showered and Luke sat in his bouncer. It still plays in my car often. And since he came home the first night, I have sung "Thunder Road" to him and it always calms him down. I think it's the song too that calms him and not my voice, as that isn't too calming. This song is another reason why I want to learn to play the piano. I'm hoping I have some musical gene that will help, otherwise I guess I will just start at beginners piano! Anyway, where was I going with this. Oh yes, my quiet home.
Dino was sleeping a minute earlier but he always seems to have an eye on me. Jack's out though.
Luke's sleeping away, with his blankie and 8 pacifiers in his crib so he can easily find one.
And here I am downstairs, loving the quietness. I normally love to be around people but today, this is heaven. What also do I crave? Love? Am happiest with? Well...
Coca-Cola
Cuddling with soft, furry dogs (see above) It's hard to not go cuddle with them now on the couch.
Eating breakfast in restaurants
Back scratches, on me of course.
Being by the water, lakes or pools are good. Rivers, not so much. They scare me about what's at the bottom.
My family.
Spoiling my son. I try to be good and not buy too many toys or clothes, but frankly, he needs some stuff. Look at these cute shoes I found this weekend!
There is even a tail for the puppy in the back!
If I could make money at it, my dream job would be to shop for other people's kids or for groceries. I suppose, I would be happy with shopping for anything for someone; I just like to spend money! :) And of course it's always better when I'm not spending my own money since my money tree is quite small. So if you know of someone that needs a personal shopper, give them my name!
Since Luke is still sleeping, I'm going to go cuddle with the dogs for a little bit and put off cleaning. I don't crave, love or need cleaning that much.

Mini Lumberjack
I haven't been too active at posting lately, but I will try to step it up a little bit.
Some favorite photos from the past week:
Great-Grandma O'Brien playing "So big!" with Luke at Peggy's for our Labor Day BBQ.
Playing with his musical toy in his room. He loves standing!
Our new piece of "furniture" for our living room. Grandpa O'Brien may work at a furniture store, but we keep acquiring plastic furniture. Good thing Luke likes it!
Our Lumberjack (and Jill) family! Jamie was so proud of Luke's outfit. Note: Jamie only wears flannel like that for the shows. Whew! ....Otherwise, he may turn into this man I saw in Ely...
Yikes!
It was COLD in Ely! Friday and Saturday barely made it to 60 degrees, plus it was windy. So Luke was able to sport his gopher hat (Thanks Peggy!) and his lumberjack outfit.
We hiked the brief 1/4 miles trail to this waterfall just north of Ely. It was beautiful!
Downstream of the falls.
I'm going to pretend he's blowing me a kiss in this photo!
My little snuggle monster!
One out of three is looking at the camera. Nice.
Hiking buddies!!
Have a great week!

Fair, Naps & Gaga
This past week we have had a lot of fun! On Monday, Jamie, Luke and I went to the MN State Fair. Of course we picked a very hot day, 94 degrees and humid to be exact. Jamie watched the lumberjack show (that he does not participate in) while Luke and I walked around in our broken B.O.B. stroller. Hmmm, I suppose I should explain why he's broken. Well, it was left outside overnight and a big dragon came down from the sky and hit it with it's tail and it broke. No? Okay, I backed over it with the Durango. Yep, that's the truth. Like every mom, I walked out of the house carrying more than I should - Luke, diaper bag, swimming bag, bag of food, bib, blankie, Netflix to return and pushing the stroller. I put the stroller behind the car to load it in the back and went to the backseat to put Luke and all the junk away, then hopped in the driver's seat and started backing up. CRUNCH. "Hmmm, that's weird, what was that?" Backup up a little further. "B.O.B.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shit!" I jumped out of the car and thankfully it was still in one piece. Well kind of. The trailer hitch picked it up but still managed to drag it a little under the car; probably since I backed up TWICE! Idiot.
So, I called the company to see if it was under warranty. Doesn't hurt to ask! Well, it's not. But I ordered the replacement parts and they are coming in the mail tomorrow! Now Dr. Jamie gets to perform surgery on B.O.B..
Back to the Fair....Since I come from a family of not being able to fix anything but a burnt out light bulb, I used Gorilla Glue on it and brought some duct tape just in case. The glue held up the whole time, until I put the brake on the stroller and I tried to scoot it closer to me and CRACK. Damn, broke again. So, we pushed it gently around and made our way to the gates. Besides our stroller issues, we had a good time despite the heat. I refrained from too much junk food overload and just had pizza, lemonade, and a giant bucket of Sweet Martha's cookies. I almost splurged on the deep fried Snickers but I didn't want to ruin my love for the real Snickers.

Oops!! Notice the dried Gorilla Glue that I re-broke.
I was teaching Luke how to drink water out of a water bottle and missed a little.

Doing his best to pull out Daddy's hair (what's left) ;)
After crying for over an hour in his crib from being so tired, he finally fell asleep, like this. HAHA
On a completely different note, I went to see Lady Gaga at the Xcel Energy Center on Tuesday with a few friends and it was amazing! Her music is a guilty pleasure of mine and since I love going to concerts, I knew this would be a really entertaining show. And I was right! She performed for over two hours, had multiple costume changes, fire spraying from her bra top and piano, had a giant 'live' monster and great dancing. This wasn't just a concert for me either, it was one of the few times I have been out for a night since I had Luke with just girls. We made friends with the bartender at McGovern's since we are all bartenders or servers, so he bought us a round (AKA poured large shots of Goldschlager that are unaccounted for). Can't beat that! I'm guessing he knew we would tip well and wanted to increase it, smart man cause it worked!
L to R: Megan (friend of Kim's who is awesome), Kim (friend of mine since 9th grade), Candice (new fun friend from the Tara) and me! The flash wasn't on thus the fuzziness, but you get it.
Lady Gaga and her crazy male/female dancers. I had to watch the Jumbo-tron a few times to see if they were men or women - usually men.
Not everyone can pull-off a clear plastic outfit with white boots and a glow stick. Haha
Until next time!
xoxo
